NewWechiau Hippo Sanctuary
A community-run conservation area along the Black Volta where visitors canoe out to view wild hippos in one of Ghana's most successful eco-tourism projects.

Ghana's most remote region and one of its most rewarding for adventurous travellers. The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary on the Black Volta River is one of only two hippo sanctuaries in West Africa, offering canoe trips to spot hippos in their natural habitat. The Gwollu Defence Wall — a 19th-century stone fortification built to repel slave raiders — tells a powerful story of resistance. Wa, the regional capital, has a distinctive mud-mosque architectural tradition, and the Dagaaba and Sissala people maintain some of Ghana's most vibrant musical and dance traditions.
