From Tamale, STC buses and shared trotros run directly to Salaga (about 2.5–3 hours via the Tamale–Yendi–Salaga road, partly unpaved). From Accra, overnight STC buses to Tamale connect onward to Salaga trotros the following morning.
Hire a local guide at the site for full historical context, approach the memorial with quiet respect, and carry cash as there are no card payment facilities in town.
Important history most people learn nothing about in school. Salaga was a major inland hub and the site does a good job explaining that role. Bring a guide, there isn't much signage.
Not as polished for tourism as Cape Coast Castle but that rawness makes it feel more authentic. Small museum area has some artifacts and information boards, could use more upkeep.
This preserved market site tells the story of the trans-Saharan and Atlantic slave trades from an inland perspective you don't get at the coastal forts. Our guide was well informed and didn't rush through the difficult parts of the history. Worth the detour if you're in the Savannah region.
