From Tamale's main lorry park, take a shared taxi or 'yellow-yellow' okada toward the Culture Centre (10-15 minutes, roughly GHS 10-15). From Accra, STC/VIP buses reach Tamale in 10-12 hours, or fly into Tamale Airport (1 hour from Accra) and taxi 20 minutes into town.
Bring small cedi notes for easy bargaining, and budget time to watch a weaver or bead-maker at work. Most are happy to explain their craft if you ask politely. Combine with a stop at the adjacent art and craft shops for souvenirs.
Spent two hours here talking to the weavers about their techniques, passed down generations. Bought a woven basket for GHS 45. This deserves way more visitors than it gets.
It's fine, some stalls were closed when we went on a weekday morning. If you go, aim for a weekend when more of the artisans are actually working.
Good place to buy authentic northern crafts instead of the touristy stuff in Accra. Beadmakers were happy to explain how they source the beads. Bit dusty and hot walking around at midday though.
The weavers work right in front of you so you can see the whole process before buying. Prices are fair, a good fugu smock ran me about GHS 180. The leatherworkers section is also worth checking out.
