From Takoradi, take a trotro to Elubo (2.5-3 hours) and then a shared taxi south to the Ankasa reserve entrance near Nkwanta (about 30 minutes). From Accra, connect via an STC bus to Takoradi first. A private vehicle is strongly recommended for the final stretch, as public transport to the gate itself is infrequent.
Wear long sleeves, trousers, and closed shoes against biting insects; bring insect repellent and waterproof bags. A mandatory ranger guide is provided at the entrance gate. Do not enter trails alone. Trails can be extremely muddy in rainy months.
Long drive to get in but the payoff is a forest that actually feels untouched. Some of the biggest trees I've ever seen. Bring mosquito repellent, lots of it.
Beautiful forest but we didn't see much wildlife besides birds and butterflies, which the ranger said is normal since the elephants stay deep in the reserve. Manage expectations.
Camped overnight inside the reserve which made the whole trip feel like a real expedition. Rangers were knowledgeable about the wildlife. Bring your own gear, facilities are basic.
This is genuinely Ghana's wettest and wildest forest, huge buttress trees, butterflies everywhere, and we heard forest elephants nearby even though we didn't see one. Trails can get muddy so proper boots are a must.
