From Sunyani, take a trotro or shared taxi to Banda Ahenkro (about 2.5 hours), then arrange a Forestry Commission vehicle or motorbike taxi for the final stretch to the Bui gate. Travellers from Kumasi should first connect through Sunyani or Techiman before heading west toward Banda; there is no direct STC service to the park itself.
Bring binoculars for birdwatching, wear neutral-coloured clothing, and book a Forestry Commission ranger guide in advance since mobile network coverage is patchy near the park.
Maybe we came at the wrong time of day but we barely saw any animals despite driving around for hours. Staff at the entrance weren't much help with guidance on where to look.
Interesting but the road getting there is genuinely rough, our car struggled in a few spots. The dam itself is worth seeing though.
Big park, good variety of wildlife if you're patient. We also saw colobus monkeys in the trees near the entrance. Facilities are basic so bring your own food and water.
Went with a small group from Sunyani, about 3 hours on rough road so budget extra time. We took a boat trip on the reservoir near the dam and actually spotted a group of hippos in the water, first time seeing them outside a zoo. Guide fee was GHS 100 for the group plus boat hire.
