From Accra's Achimota or Circle terminals, STC/VIP/MMT buses run the roughly 350km, 6-8 hour route to Nkwanta (via Hohoe and Jasikan); the park office and gate lie a short taxi ride outside town. From Tamale, connect via the Yendi-Bimbila-Nkwanta road corridor (allow a full day of travel with transfers).
Book a Wildlife Division guide at the entrance before setting out; trails are unmarked in places and elephants do range through the reserve. Bring sturdy hiking boots, a rain shell, and more drinking water than you think you'll need; there are no shops inside the park.
Nature was great but the trail markers were confusing and our guide seemed unsure of the route at one point. Worth going if you're adventurous, not for a casual day trip.
This should be talked about way more than it is. Untouched forest, real wilderness feel, none of the crowds you get at Mole or Kakum. Just know facilities are basic, camping is your best bet.
360 sq km and it feels like it, we only covered a fraction on our trail. Elephant tracks everywhere but no sightings for us. Roads getting to the entrance from Nkwanta are rough, a 4x4 helps a lot.
Barely saw another tourist the whole two days we were there. Guides spotted chimp calls in the distance though we never saw them up close, still an amazing hike through the mountain rainforest. Bring your own food, nothing sold inside the park.
