From Accra, STC/VIP buses reach Kete Krachi/Dambai (roughly 350km, 6-8 hours via Hohoe or the Eastern Region route); from Kete Krachi, shared taxis cover the final stretch to Brewaniase within Krachi West District. Roads are unpaved for the final approach, so allow extra time in the rainy season.
Arrange an introduction to a community elder in advance if possible; the deeper trade-route history here is oral rather than signposted. Roads can be difficult after heavy rain, so a 4WD or okada may be needed in the wet season.
Important piece of 19th century history that deserves more visitors and more preservation funding. The shrine itself is still active in the community which adds another layer to the visit.
Not as developed for tourism as Cape Coast's slave sites but arguably more raw and honest for it. Bring a guide who knows the local history, there's little signage on site.
The Dente shrine at Kete Krachi and the surrounding route tell a story most people outside the region never hear about. Our guide gave detailed context on the trans-Saharan and Atlantic trade connections here. Sobering visit, glad we made time for it.
