From Tamale, STC and VIP buses run daily to Damongo (about 2 hours); from Damongo, shared taxis or a chartered vehicle cover the remaining 24 km to the park gate via Larabanga (roughly 45 minutes, partly unpaved). A direct Tamale–Larabanga trotro also runs most mornings from Tamale's main lorry station.
Book a walking safari slot on arrival as spaces are limited, wear neutral colours and closed shoes, carry drinking water and sun protection, and never approach elephants without a ranger.
Brought my kids and they still talk about the elephants months later. Guides were patient with the children's questions and kept everyone safe. A must-do if you're anywhere in the north.
Wildlife viewing was fantastic, no complaints there. But the motel rooms need serious renovation, our AC barely worked and the toilets need work. For a flagship national park the accommodation should be much better maintained.
Elephants at the watering hole right by the motel restaurant, unreal to watch with your breakfast. Road from Tamale is long and bumpy in parts, took us about four hours by shared taxi. Worth every minute of the drive.
Genuinely one of the best wildlife experiences I've had anywhere in West Africa. The walking safaris feel much more intimate than a jeep tour, you're actually on foot near the animals. Book the early slot, animals are more active before the heat picks up.
Did the early morning walking safari and our guide got us close enough to a family of elephants that I could hear them breathing. Saw warthogs, antelope, and dozens of bird species too. The motel rooms are basic but the pool overlooking the watering hole makes up for it. Entry fee was GHS 60 plus the guide fee.
