From Tamale's main lorry station, shared taxis and trotros cover the roughly 25km/30-minute trip north to Savelugu along the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway. From Accra, take an STC bus to Tamale (10-12 hours) or fly in (1 hour), then continue north by taxi or trotro.
Arrange an introduction through a local guide rather than arriving unannounced. This is an active chieftaincy seat. Combine with Savelugu's market and the short drive back to Tamale for a relaxed half-day itinerary.
Not a lot of tourist infrastructure here, went with no signage or guide available. Interesting if you already know the local history but a bit confusing otherwise.
Nice detour if you're driving between Tamale and further north. Landscape around the palace with shea trees is quietly beautiful, especially at golden hour.
Smaller than Yendi's palace but the surrounding shea and baobab savanna scenery makes the trip worthwhile. People in Savelugu were friendly and happy to chat about the chieftaincy.
