Central Mosque Road, near Tamale Central Market, Tamale, Northern Region
STC and VIP buses run daily from Accra's Kaneshie/Tudu terminals to Tamale (roughly 10-12 hours); from Tamale's main lorry station, the mosque is a 5-minute taxi or shared-taxi ride toward the Central Market. Domestic flights (Africa World Airlines, PAV) connect Accra/Kumasi to Tamale Airport in about 1 hour, followed by a 15-minute taxi into town.
Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), remove shoes before entering covered prayer areas, and avoid photographing people directly without asking. Fridays are busiest; arrive early if you want a quiet look at the exterior.
Couldn't go inside as a non-Muslim tourist which is understandable, but there wasn't much signage explaining the history from outside either. Still a good photo stop if you're passing through.
Grew up seeing this mosque every week. Proud that visitors are starting to notice it now that Tamale is on the map more. Come at sunset, the light on the walls is beautiful.
Impressive building, one of the oldest in the region. We just admired it from outside since we're not Muslim, but the architecture alone was worth the stop. Dress modestly if you plan to go closer.
Passed by this on a Friday and the call to prayer echoing across that part of Tamale gave me chills. Ask permission before taking photos, especially during prayer times. Worth the short detour if you're already in town.
