From Bolgatanga, take a trotro or shared taxi to Sirigu via Navrongo (about 1 hour, GHS 12–15). From Tamale, first travel to Bolgatanga (roughly 2.5–3 hours) before connecting onward.
Book through SWOPA ahead of time for a guaranteed guide, consider an overnight stay for the fullest experience, and buy pottery or baskets directly from the women's cooperative.
Photographed every wall I could, the patterns are all different from house to house. This was the highlight of our whole Upper East trip.
Beautiful houses and pottery for sale too. It's a bit off the main road so a car or taxi is needed to get out there comfortably from Bolgatanga.
Met some of the women who do the painting themselves, they explained the meaning behind different patterns. A really special cultural stop that felt genuinely community-run rather than a tourist trap.
This women-led village project preserves a tradition you won't see much elsewhere in Ghana. The Kassena homes painted in black, white, and red patterns are like walking through an outdoor art gallery. Buy something from the craft shop, it directly supports the artists.
