Address
Central Market, Bolgatanga, Bolgatanga Municipal, Upper East Region, Ghana
Bolgatanga is the regional capital and transport hub. STC and VIP buses connect directly from Tamale (about 2.5–3 hours) and Accra (roughly 12 hours overnight). The market sits within walking distance of the main lorry station.
Bring small cash denominations for bargaining, watch belongings in crowded sections, and ask permission before photographing vendors directly.
Good for shopping but be ready to haggle hard, initial prices quoted to us as visitors were clearly inflated. Once you settle on a fair price the quality is solid.
The leatherwork here is genuinely impressive, bought a bag that's held up well over a year later. Crowded and hot at peak hours so come earlier in the day.
Massive market, easy to lose track of time wandering through it. Traders are used to tourists and will bargain fairly if you're polite about it. Bring small notes, change can be hard to find.
Bought four woven baskets here for less than what one costs in Accra craft shops, around GHS 35 each after a bit of bargaining. The smocks and leatherwork are also excellent quality. Go early on market day for the best selection.
