From Bolgatanga, shared taxis and trotros run to Tongo town (about 30 minutes, GHS 8–10), from where a local guide leads the walk up to Tengzug. From Tamale, connect via Bolgatanga (roughly 2.5–3 hours) before continuing to Tongo.
Hire a Talensi community guide, wear sturdy closed shoes for the rock scramble, dress modestly, and ask before photographing the shrine cave or priests.
Beautiful scenery but our guide rushed us through without much explanation of the shrine's history. Would have liked more context for what we were seeing.
Respect the site, it's still an active shrine for the community. Guide asked us not to photograph certain areas which we understood and followed. Physically demanding hike but manageable.
The granite boulders piled up over the hills look almost sculpted. Climbing to the shrine takes effort but the views over the plains make it worth it. Bring a hat, there's little shade on the way up.
Dramatic granite hills and the shrine itself has a real spiritual weight to it. Our guide, a local from Tengzug, walked us through the pilgrimage significance. Steep climb in parts, wear proper shoes.
