Zuarungu Crocodile Pond, Zuarungu, Bolgatanga East District, Upper East Region, Ghana
From Bolgatanga, shared taxis and trotros to Zuarungu run regularly (about 20–25 minutes, GHS 6–8). From Tamale, first travel to Bolgatanga (roughly 2.5–3 hours) before connecting onward.
Arrange a local guide in Bolgatanga beforehand, bring small cash, and never approach the water's edge without the caretaker present.
Honestly preferred this to Paga, same sacred pond concept without the crowds or the constant tip requests. Bolgatanga is close by so easy to combine both in one day.
We drove out expecting something similar to Paga but there wasn't much staff around when we arrived and had to wait almost an hour before anyone could show us the crocodiles.
Smaller crowd than Paga which we preferred, felt less rushed. Same idea, chicken lure and then a photo op beside the crocodile. Fair pricing, no aggressive tipping requests.
Went here instead of the busier Paga pond and had a much more relaxed experience, way fewer visitors around. Handlers were just as knowledgeable and the sacred pond has the same community significance.
