From Tamale, shared taxis and STC-affiliated buses cover the roughly 147km, 2.5-3 hour road north to Gambaga via Walewale. From Accra, take an STC or VIP bus to Tamale (10-12 hours) and connect onward by road.
Hire a local guide in Gambaga town to find the rock-art sites and safest cliff-edge viewpoints, as the escarpment edge is unfenced in most places. Approach the Witches' Camp, if visiting, with sensitivity and through a proper local introduction rather than as a curiosity stop.
Beautiful scenery but very little infrastructure for visitors, no signage or facilities to speak of. Bring your own water and food, nothing for sale nearby.
Genuinely one of the most dramatic landscapes I've seen in Ghana, the sandstone cliffs go on forever. Almost no other visitors when we went which made it feel like our own discovery. Worth the trek up north.
Some faded rock art near one of the viewpoints, our local guide knew exactly where to find it which we wouldn't have on our own. Bring layers, it gets breezy up on the escarpment even in the heat.
The cliff stretches for 100km and the baboon troops near the edge were a fun surprise, kept a respectful distance and watched them for a while. Roads up from Tamale are long but the scenery along the way makes up for it.
