From Tamale, shared taxis and trotros travel the roughly 35km/45-minute route west to Tolon along the Tamale-Tolon road. From Accra, take an STC bus to Tamale (10-12 hours) or fly in (1 hour), then continue by road to Tolon and arrange grove access with a local guide or community elder.
This is a living sacred site, not a managed nature reserve. Always visit with a local guide, follow their instructions on what can and cannot be touched or photographed, and never disturb the crocodile pond or wildlife.
Honestly a bit hard to find without a guide and the sacred crocodile pond was smaller than I expected. Still, the baobabs are massive and worth seeing if you're already in the area.
Peaceful and a little eerie in the best way. No real facilities out there, no toilets, so plan accordingly. Bring cash for a small community donation, they use it for upkeep of the grove.
The birdlife alone made this worth the trip, saw species I've never seen anywhere else in Ghana. Very quiet, felt untouched. Definitely need someone from the village to walk you through.
This place is protected by the community for a reason, the old baobabs feel like something out of another era. The crocodiles here are calm around visitors but still keep a respectful distance. Bring a local guide, it's easy to miss the entrance.
