Jamestown (Usshertown), near Fort James, Accra
Trotros from Kaneshie or Circle to 'Jamestown' or 'Bukom' drop you within walking distance. From central Accra, a taxi/Bolt takes 10-15 minutes. The lighthouse is a short walk from Ussher Fort and the Jamestown fishing harbour, so most visitors combine all three on foot.
Hire a local guide for the neighbourhood. Jamestown's streets are narrow and unmarked, and a guide adds context you'd otherwise miss. Wear closed shoes; the spiral stairs inside are steep and narrow.
Loved seeing the fishing quarter from above, boats and nets everywhere. Area around the lighthouse can feel a bit unsafe after dark so go during the day.
Cool structure, red and white paint is very photogenic, but the stairs inside are steep and a little sketchy in places. Not for anyone with mobility issues or a fear of tight spaces.
Went up right before sunset and the light over the boxing gyms and fishing boats below was incredible. Small tip expected for the caretaker who lets you climb. Combine with a walk through Jamestown itself.
Climbing the narrow stairs to the top is a workout but the view over Jamestown's fishing quarter is worth it. Neighborhood around it is gritty and real, not polished for tourists which I liked.
