Best time to visit
Easter weekend for the paragliding festival (book accommodation months ahead; it sells out). For a quieter visit, November through February offers the clearest views and coolest, driest air.
Address
Atibie / Abetifi ridge road, Kwahu South Municipal District, Eastern Region
From Accra, take the N4/N6 toward Nkawkaw (about 2.5 hours), then climb the escarpment road toward Mpraeso, Abetifi, and Atibie. Trotros and STC buses to Nkawkaw depart from Accra's Neoplan station; from Nkawkaw, shared taxis and trotros run up the plateau road to the ridge towns.
Bring a jacket or sweater; the ridge is genuinely cool, especially at dawn and after rain. If visiting for the paragliding festival, book accommodation in Abetifi, Mpraeso, or Nkawkaw well in advance and expect heavy traffic on the escarpment roads over the holiday weekend.
Views are great but outside of festival season there isn't a ton of infrastructure for tourists, mostly just the landscape itself. Fine if that's what you're after.
Cool climate up on the plateau which was a welcome change. Several good viewpoints along the road, stop at more than one if you can. Great for photography, especially early morning mist.
Even without the festival the views from the escarpment are dramatic, you can see for miles across the valley. Roads winding up are steep with sharp bends, take it slow if driving yourself.
Timed our visit with the Easter paragliding festival and it did not disappoint, watching people launch off the escarpment against that backdrop was something else. Book accommodation in Mpraeso or Nkawkaw months ahead, it sells out.
