From Kumasi, take a trotro from Asafo or Kejetia station heading to Kuntanase or Abono (about 30km, 45–60 minutes, GHS 10–15). From Kuntanase, shared taxis or okadas cover the last stretch down to the lakeshore villages. A private taxi from Kumasi direct to Abono takes about 45 minutes and is easy to negotiate for a half-day round trip.
Bring cash; there are no ATMs around the lake. Wear reef shoes or sandals for the rocky shoreline entry points. Respect the local taboo against certain metal boats in some villages; ask before launching any watercraft. Bilharzia risk is low but avoid drinking untreated lake water.
It's a pretty lake but I think the photos online oversell it a bit. Boat ride was fun though and our guide explained the taboo against using metal boats on the water, which was interesting.
Grew up hearing about this lake from my grandmother and finally got to see it myself. The villages around the crater rim have their own quiet charm too. Road down from the rim is steep and rough in a few spots so go slow if you're driving.
Beautiful spot, very calming. Some of the shoreline areas are a bit littered which was disappointing given how sacred the lake is supposed to be to the Ashanti. Still glad we came.
Took a shared taxi from Kumasi, about 45 minutes to the crater rim then a short walk down to the water. The lake sits inside an old meteorite crater so the shape alone is worth the trip. We paddled out on one of the traditional plank boats for GHS 40 per person. Water was calm and cool, perfect for a hot afternoon.
