From Kejetia station in Kumasi, take a trotro heading toward Barekese/Owabi (about 23km northwest, 35-45 minutes, GHS 10-12). A taxi or Bolt from central Kumasi takes roughly 35-40 minutes and costs about GHS 60-90 one way.
Bring binoculars; this is one of the best birding spots near Kumasi and rentals aren't available. Wear neutral-colored clothing to avoid startling wildlife. Mosquito repellent is essential near the reservoir shoreline.
Drove out specifically for birdwatching and there was almost no visible wildlife the whole time we were there, maybe wrong season but nobody warned us. Facilities were also locked with no staff around.
The reservoir itself is nice but the paths around it are overgrown in places and there was trash near the entrance. Feels a bit neglected for a protected sanctuary.
Peaceful spot but there wasn't much information available about what we were looking at. A guide with binoculars to share would improve the experience a lot.
Went early for the birds, the wetland attracts a good range of waterbirds. Brought my own binoculars which helped a lot since the sanctuary doesn't provide any.
