From Takoradi Market Circle, take a trotro toward Agona Nkwanta/Busua and alight at Dixcove junction (about 45 minutes, GHS 10-15), then a short walk or okada down to the harbor and fort. From Accra, board an STC or VIP bus to Takoradi first (4-5 hours), then connect via trotro. Dixcove is a 10-minute taxi ride from Busua Beach.
Wear closed shoes for uneven stone stairs inside the fort. Ask before photographing fishermen or their catch up close; a small tip or purchase is appreciated. Combine with Busua Beach for an easy half-day loop.
Fort was closed for maintenance when we arrived with no notice online. Harbor walk was fine but disappointing to miss the main reason we came.
This felt like the most honest slave-trade site we visited in the region, less polished for tourists and more raw. Our guide didn't hold back on the details.
Fort tour was informative but shorter than expected, maybe 30 minutes. The harbor scene outside was honestly just as interesting as the fort itself.
What struck me most was how alive the harbor still is, fishermen mending nets right below the fort walls. The fort itself gets far fewer visitors than Cape Coast or Elmina which gave us space to actually sit with the history.
