Elmina Castle, Elmina, Central Region, Ghana
From Cape Coast, shared taxis and trotros to Elmina leave regularly from the STC roundabout (15-20 minutes, GHS 5-8). From Accra, take an STC/VIP bus to Cape Coast first, then connect via trotro to Elmina, or arrange a direct taxi (roughly 3.5 hours total). The castle sits at the harbor mouth and is walkable from Elmina's main taxi station.
Combine with a walk along the harbor to watch the fishing fleet; it's one of the best photo opportunities in the region. Bargain politely with souvenir sellers near the entrance; prices are negotiable.
Good half day trip from Cape Coast, maybe 15 minutes by taxi. Climb up to the top for photos of the harbor, it's actually a nice view once you've done the history tour.
The history is important but we got hassled by unofficial guides at the gate before we even bought tickets. Once inside with our real guide it was fine. Wish there was better crowd control at the entrance.
This was the highlight of our whole Ghana trip. The governor's quarters upstairs versus the dungeons below says everything about that era. We stayed almost two hours just walking and reading.
Great guide, very knowledgeable about the Dutch and Portuguese periods. The harbor smell can be strong depending on wind direction so heads up. Entry was around GHS 50 last I checked.
1482, built by the Portuguese, it's wild standing somewhere that old. The fishing harbor right next to it is chaotic in a good way, boats everywhere, nets drying. Do both castles if you have time, they tell different parts of the story.
