From Accra, take a trotro or STC/VIP bus from Kaneshie or Circle station bound for Cape Coast (roughly 3 hours, GHS 40-60). Ancane/OA buses run frequently. From Cape Coast STC station, the castle is a 10-minute walk or short taxi ride (GHS 10-15) along the seafront road. You can't miss the white walls facing the ocean.
Wear comfortable shoes; dungeon floors are uneven stone. The experience is emotionally heavy; allow at least 1.5-2 hours and don't rush the tour. Photography is allowed in most areas but check current signage at the Door of No Return.
Took the trotro from Accra to Cape Coast station then a short taxi to the castle. Cheap and easy. The museum upstairs has some good context before you go down into the dungeons. Bring a bottle of water, it gets warm walking around outside.
The history is heavy and important but the site itself feels a little neglected. Some info plaques were faded and hard to read. Toilets near the entrance need work. Still worth going.
Our guide had three other groups waiting so we felt hurried through the female dungeons. Still an important stop. Parking is limited on weekends so get there early if you're driving from Accra.
Every Ghanaian should visit this at least once. GHS 60 for adults, guides are included in the ticket. The view over the ocean from the ramparts is stunning but you can't separate that from what happened below. Give yourself at least 90 minutes.
Went with my mom, both of us diaspora visiting for the first time. The dungeon tour left us in tears, our guide Kwesi didn't sugarcoat anything. The Door of No Return hits different when you actually stand in it. Book the guided tour, don't just wander on your own.
