Any time of year. Indoor galleries make it ideal during the rainy season (April-July) or the hottest midday hours.

Trotros from Circle or Kaneshie to 'Barnes Road' or 'Ministries' stop within a 5-minute walk of the museum. From central Accra hotels, a taxi/Bolt ride is 5-10 minutes. The museum is also walkable from Kwame Nkrumah Circle in about 15-20 minutes.
Photography rules vary by gallery. Ask staff before shooting inside. Allow at least 90 minutes to see the full collection properly; guided tours are worth the small extra fee.
Compact museum, maybe an hour is enough to see it all. Fine art gallery upstairs had some standout contemporary pieces I wasn't expecting.
Good rainy day activity in Accra. Guide gave excellent context on the archaeological section especially. Gift shop is small but has some genuine local crafts.
The collection itself is interesting, ethnographic and fine art pieces you won't see elsewhere, but some display cases look like they haven't been updated in decades. Renovation would help a lot.
Small but packed with great pieces, loved the kente and traditional textile displays alongside the archaeological finds. Air conditioned too which is a nice break from Accra heat. Entry is very affordable.
