Best time to visit
November through March (dry season) for clear skies and the best lake and dam views. Late afternoon light is ideal for photos of the dam wall and reservoir.

From Accra, take the N1 to Tema then the N2/Akosombo road northeast, about 2 to 2.5 hours by car. Direct trotros and shared taxis to Akosombo depart from Accra's Tema Station and Ashaiman; the dam site and VRA visitor area are a short taxi ride from the Akosombo lorry park.
Photography directly on and around the dam structure is restricted in places for security reasons. Stick to the designated viewing areas and ask your guide before taking photos. Book a boat cruise in advance during peak weekends. Bring sunscreen; there's little shade at the main overlook.
One of the largest man made lakes in the world and you really feel it standing at the overlook. Did a sunset cruise afterward, would recommend pairing the two.
Stopped here on the way to the Volta region, worth an hour. Security is tight around the actual dam which makes sense given what it is. Nice town nearby for lunch by the water.
The viewpoint area felt underwhelming honestly, expected more interpretive info about how it all works. The lake views are the real draw here.
Took a boat cruise on the lake near the dam which was the highlight, not just the dam viewpoint itself. Great photo spot from the bridge over the Volta. Book the cruise in advance on weekends, it fills up.
Hard to grasp the scale until you're standing there looking at Lake Volta stretching to the horizon. You need a permit or guided visit to actually see the dam structure up close, plan ahead for that.
